Back in March, I attended an INSIDE OUT: The Expressive Arts Adoption Healing Seminar. If you didn’t hear about it, you can read about my “adoption healing experience” here! Well, Patrick and Craig are coming back to the east coast again, so if you missed the Inside Out Adoption Healing in NY or can’t get over to the west coast, now is you chance!

They will be presented in multiple cities in late June and early July. This is the one closest to me:

INSIDE OUT: THE EXPRESSIVE ARTS ADOPTION HEALING SEMINAR

to be presented at Genesis Spiritual Life and Conference Center

June 1, 2013 Westfield, MA Genesis Spiritual Life and Conference Center is pleased to announce it will host INSIDE OUT: THE EXPRESSIVE ARTS ADOPTION HEALING SEMINAR on Sunday, July 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Inside Out offers the opportunity for anyone involved in adoption, including adoptees, birth/first parents, adoptive parents, foster parents and children, siblings, significant others and professionals to identify and validate wounds and challenges from their experience. The seminar will use creative expression and light spiritual practices to foster resolution and healing around adoption.
Inside Out, in its first time in Western MA will be presented by both Craig Hyman of New York City and Patrick McMahon of San Diego, CA, both adoptees who have experienced the depth of separation trauma from blood relatives, as well as the transformative, healing process of the mind, body, and spirit. Both Hyman and McMahon stated, “Throughout the day, there will be opportunities to externalize accessed wounds, leading to a sense of release and resolution.” “We aim to promote personal growth in a healing atmosphere,” they added.
Over the past 15 years, both Craig and Patrick have been extensively involved in adoption education and reform. Having individually experienced healing from various expressive arts, spiritual and therapeutic modalities, they took two years to extract the most effective practices and develop this seminar. They share a deep passion to offer others touched by adoption the same opportunities for healing. Hyman is now an Adoption Life Coach and McMahon, speaker and author. Both facilitate adoption support groups in their communities as well as participate in various adoption conferences nationally and globally.
“As our Mission states ‘Genesis creates an environment that will reveal the love of God for all creation and bring hope and healing to all who come’, so we are so happy to have the opportunity to present this path to healing,” expressed Liz Walz, Executive Director of Genesis Spiritual Life and Conference Center. Genesis was founded in 1976 by the Sisters of Providence and prior was the Holy Child Guild, also founded by the Sisters, a place for expectant young women. Many of those women decided to place their child up for adoption. The Sisters also founded Brightside for Children and Families in 1881 which up until recently administered adoptions.
During the seminar, attendees will choose from a variety of creative expression sessions, each led by Craig, Patrick, and at times other leaders in their fields. Sessions include meditation, movement, dance, journaling, collage, role play, bodywork, and more. The day will end with a group discussion and structured closing to promote a smooth transition, and establish a sense of community and ongoing support.
The cost to attend the seminar is $140 which includes lunch and snacks. If guests of the program wish to stay overnight either before or after the program, the additional charge is $80 per person per night for a private room or $60 per person per night in a shared room which includes dinner and breakfast. There is limited financial scholarship money for those who cannot pay the full price of the seminar.
Genesis Spiritual Life and Conference Center is located at 53 Mill Street, Westfield, MA. For more information about the program and to register, please Genesis at call 413-562-3627.

Musings of the Lame was started in 2005 primarily as a simple blog recording the feelings of a birthmother as she struggled to understand how the act of relinquishing her first newborn so to adoption in 1987 continued to be a major force in her life. Built from the knowledge gained in the adoption community, it records the search for her son and the adoption reunion as it happened. Since then, it has grown as an adoption forum encompassing the complexity of the adoption industry, the fight to free her sons adoption records and the need for Adoptee Rights, and a growing community of other birthmothers, adoptive parents and adopted persons who are able to see that so much what we want to believe about adoption is wrong.
