Adoptees Wanted for Social Media Search Exposure

Adoptees Searching with Social Media Need help

Target : ABC Nightline News

Perhaps you have seen the postings yourself, but I was recently contacted by a producer at  ABC  News Nightline about doing a story on Adoptees Searching through Social Media.  While we all know how the media LOVES to use adoption stories as heartwarming tear jerking  fluff for ratings, I have spoken extensively with Dan, the producer, and he is very interested in trying in the fight for OBC access and reunion complexities in this piece. Of course, it is difficult to get the media folks to understand the complexity of adoption, but I hope you can believe me when I say that we talked A LOT and while it will be impossible to cove the whole  range of what we know, he has a good foundation. I really did my best here.

Are Your Willing to be Public and Are You Ready?

Adoptees searching for reunionsAnyway, of course they are looking for adoptees/ parents who are searching and willing to be filmed. Luckily, the postings they have done have not given them much, so it goes to us. I have sent this  call out privately via the Adoption Army rather than be public, but the “casting” for this is still happening. It is my belief that from within the adoption community, we should have the ability to control how the media represents us and who are good stories to portray. Aside from that, I am not an adoptee casting agent (nor pimp) , nor do I want to be. While the original call to action did yield what I passed on as good prospects, they are still looking. le sigh.

In addition, like so many of us. I am concerned about the continued exploitation of our community and especially adoptees. It always worries me when the media shows a sensationalized adoption story  with folks who are clearly overwhelmed, unprepared and without  support. I do not wish to take part with leading lambs to the slaughter.

On the other hand, the opportunity for exposure does provide unique opportunities for education  regarding  Adoptee Rights legislation, Adoption realities, and  understanding the complexities of reunion.  Plus, the searches that ARE filmed will have national promotion and could greatly help a desperate search.

What They Are Looking for ahem “Good TV”

Now, they wanted to shoot one search story from beginning to end. And yes, preferably a younger pretty female adoptee with a good story and they would like the “first contact” footage. Through our conversations the thought is now that a few different searches can be filmed. They will be at different points in the journey ( starting a search, finding info, making contact, post reunion ). They still would like a pretty chick, but….discussed was that the more stories shown with a range of folks can help viewers see how normal it is for all walks of life, etc.  Yet, they still want a younger adoptee with a compelling story in the NY area. And, if folks are in the NY / Tri state areas there is more of a chance of better coverage.  The film out of NY, are NYers, so the NY adoptee Rights bill fight would get a more noise as well (which DOES affect the legislation in the rest of the country as many ask about where NY is)

So this is my question for all of you:

Do you know adoptees searching, either using the Facebook images, preferably with many shares and attention, or willing to go social, who are emotionally ready and willing to go public? Who really needs the help with exposure? Who can handle the sensation filming? Who can represent?

People have to be available for filming and the schedules are often last minute. At least that has been my personal experience dealing with TV stuff in the past. If they are ready, you have to be or they move on. .

So please.. scout the possibilities. Ask those you know searching, and of course, clue them in. Share this post, etc.

Email me at FixAdoption@gmail.com or hit me up on Facebook!

Please send me:

Full names, locations ( city  & state is fine) and a brief story of what point in your search you are at. Please send a current picture of yourself, email and phone number for contact.  If you have a Adoptee Search image or Facebook page for a search, please send links to that as well.

I cannot promise anything, but  I am compiling lists of what has been sent and passing them on with notes as to what value any particular search would give to viewers. After that, it will be up to them to choose and get in touch!

I am a birth mother that put my son up for adoption in 1973. I have been searching for 40 years. About 4 or 5 weeks ago I got a friend request on facebook from my sons adopted mother. We have talked extensively and I’ve even gotten pictures of him and oh so many stories. But the thing I want most, I apparently can’t have. My son wants nothing to do with me. You’re right, you never get over it. I carry this with me always.

  2. I do not know what adoption is like, but certainly want to help anyone in their plight. There is a man from Erie, PA searching for his Birthparents and has over 200,000 shares on Facebook. If there is anything you can do to assist I am asking that you will.

Kevin Michael Sullivan with posterboard on Facebook including a small snipit of his story and his phone numbers to contact him. I want nothing but the best for this gentleman. (you may have to copy the link and paste it in Google Images for it to work)

Ready ,willing and even have my facial expressions acted out through my mirror.Sounds weird but I want the first thing he would see to be like something one awes over then the automatic emotions take over then hugs.Yes this my favorite dreams of dreams to come true before I pass away.Being 65 isn’t the worse yet as I can stand use my limbs, smile cry with happiness.A well known man asked about how to heal women that unfortunately went and relinquished. Most all mothers never forgot and grieve for as long as their own were gone from them.I want to share my story which seems common with the rest of 1st mothers that I was 24 ,just divorced as we were abandoned at the worst time and he took the savings too.I was referred to this agency I thought was going to help me until I could get back on my feet and make us a nesting home to raise you and older brother by 5 years born 9-17-1968-Died December 15 ,2011 hit by xmas traffic on his bicycle.I miss him and you,he wanted to find you in 2008 but he got a divorce. He had a daughter called Jenna ,shes 13 with beautiful brown eyes and long brown, shes 5ft 4in.I’m only 5 ft.and 90 pds.My eyes are Hazel, natural dirty blonde to a light brown.Your dad had hazel eyes 5ft.10 188 pds then up.He died 2005 and,30 miles from me.Found out Kliengarns are your siblings now grown. If you read this or someone knows of you born in St.Marys Hospital in W.P.B,Fla 9-25-1973 the Childrens Home Society was no help at all, something went wrong, not the usual so I know yourpapers are in the agency but NO PROOF haunts me because of the acute blanks and no non ID You were found or do you even know it? I told the SW that and she apologized for telling me storys she made up like you were a lawyer. You had an office of your own .I wrote you a 1st letter but she said she lost it and I wasn’t to write you anymore as I had things all signed, notorized and paid for (the Government) I wonder,Does the IRS have proof where you paid them ? I’m disabled but moveable.I consider myself lucky that I got to have 2 baby boys never wanted to lose you many reasons.Lucky to have a granddaughter.Actually in reality I don’t physically have custody of the ones alive.I only know of one alive and her adoption wasn’t to happen ,no one called me Her blood grandmother with plenty of help for whatever she needed. They are my lifes mission like the rest of the first mothers searching and visa versa with our sons and daughters ,willing to call you any name you want and my name is not a birth mom,but seeing you I would forfeit that cruel name. They were going to call adoptees I read somewhere birthdaughters ,birthsons and it doesn’t sound nice .<3FOREVER
